The most important part of Wheaton Academy’s new turf fields is the part you’ll never see. Beneath the surface is a Brock shock pad spanning more than 200,000 square feet, making it the largest investment in athlete safety on campus. While many people focus on what happens when an athlete hits the ground, one of the greatest benefits is what happens during every step, cut, and sprint. The shock pad provides a more stable and consistent surface than traditional sand-and-rubber turf systems, helping reduce lower-extremity fatigue and the wear and tear that can contribute to lower-body injuries. It also absorbs impact forces in a way that closely resembles high-quality natural grass, creating a safer playing experience for all athletes. In addition, the pad is expected to extend the life of the turf by one to two years. The photos below show the progression from construction to the finished fields.
